The unveiling of the Lee County Confederate Monument was on April 6,
1911. The monument, erected by the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy, is thirty feet tall and was carved from
Georgia granite and Italian marble. The festivities surrounding the event
amounted to a celebration of enormous proportions. Special trains brought
visitors from out of town and local businesses closed early for the big
event. Speeches were preceded by a parade that was six blocks long.
Participating in the parade were: The Alabama Polytechnic Institute band;
the API cadet company; General George P. Harrison, commander of the
Alabama United Confederate Veterans; approximately 300 Confederate
veterans; and two floats, one of them containing a female chorus. Local
and visiting dignitaries were conveyed in horse drawn carriages and
decorated automobiles. A large crowd gathered for the unveiling of the
statue, which was preceded by speeches by Mrs. W. A. Andrews, president of
the local UDC chapter, Mrs. Bennett Battle Ross, of Auburn and the
Honorable T. D. Samford.
