MARDI GRAS GOWN, CROWN AND SCEPTER

This Mardi Gras Queen’s gown and accessories were worn on January 19, 1958, by Mabel E. Hepner, of Chicago, Illinois, paternal grandmother of Opelika Mayor, Barbara Patton. Mrs. Hepner, the first Mardi Gras Queen from outside New Orleans reigned over 6,000 revelers at the annual ball of the Krewe of Iris, held at the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium. Mrs. Hepner’s gown is 24 carat gold cloth, encrusted with rhinestones. Her gold mantle (standing collar) was enhanced with white plumes and the fleur de lis pattern was outlined in her gown ,scepter and crown. During her visit, Mrs. Hepner was made an honorary citizen of New Orleans. Mr. Edwin J. Gaudet, Jr. of New Orleans was King of the Ball.
